Singapore/Hong Kong, 14 November 2019 – Herbert Smith Freehills has been awarded Law Firm of the Year in the 2nd Regulation Asia Awards for Excellence 2019 at a ceremony in Singapore on 13 November 2019.
One of the firm’s key highlights for the year was in August 2019, when Herbert Smith Freehills became one of only six international law firms to receive approval to form a joint operation in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The Herbert Smith Freehills Kewei Joint Operation (JO) gives clients access to quality PRC law advice through the JO alongside international legal expertise and the ability to directly interact with PRC regulators. The development was highlighted by one judge as particularly significant given the importance of the Mainland market to international clients.
Herbert Smith Freehills was also singled out for its strong relationships with regulators and industry bodies, and the work it has done to highlight concerns that resulted from the SFC’s approach to address ‘rolling bad apples’. Also of significance was the number of secondees Herbert Smith Freehills placed within various financial institutions over the past year, effectively providing the firm unique insights into the challenges such firms face, and enabling it to further deepen its relationships with key industry players.
Herbert Smith Freehills is also known for its deep bench strength and extensive track record in handling high-profile, complex and sensitive regulatory investigations, and its advisory offerings are known to be highly sought after in the financial industry. The judges also highlighted the firm’s fintech practice, which advises established technology firms, traditional financial institutions active in the fintech space, and well-backed fintech startups – in areas including robo-advisory, crypto exchanges, stored value facilities, initial coin and security token offerings, payment services and blockchain platforms, to name a few areas of focus.
Herbert Smith Freehills was also awarded Law Firm of the Year in the 2018 Regulation Asia Awards for its work on high-profile investigations, IPO sponsor misconduct, anti-money laundering, fintech, cybersecurity, and broad industry engagement to shape regulatory change across the region.
