Singapore/Hong Kong, 14 November 2019 – A joint collaboration by data analytics startup Gekko Lab and HKEX (Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited) has won the Regtech Award for Big Data and Analytics in the 2nd Regulation Asia Awards for Excellence 2019 at a ceremony in Singapore on 13 November 2019.
In a rigorous selection process involving a judging panel made up of subject-matter experts and the Regulation Asia editorial team, the Gekko-HKEX collaboration was highlighted as “one of the more unique partnerships” between a startup and an industry incumbent with a “shared goal of making public equity markets more transparent”.
Gekko has made use of its proprietary name-entity extraction and name-matching algorithms to create the first Hong Kong-China financial knowledge graph using public data sources. Since early 2018, HKEX and Gekko have been collaborating to create one of the most comprehensive and accurate databases of Hong Kong-listed company transactions to serve as the basis for a number of analytics capabilities.
The collaboration has helped to deliver more comprehensive and accurate information about listed companies and the people associated with them. This is particularly significant given that Hong Kong is consistently one of the top IPO markets in the world each year, said one judge.
“Gekko has managed to maximise regulatory efficiency, and promote fairness and sustainability in an increasingly complex market,” the judge said, adding that “numerous other use-cases could evolve from the project.”
Indeed, Gekko says the database will serve as the basis for various future capabilities, including to provide on-demand regulatory insights and better reporting guidance for listed companies. For its part, HKEX believes that this collaboration demonstrates how established companies – including financial regulators – can successfully embrace the kind of fresh thinking and new technologies that help advance our city’s capital markets.
